New Years Eve (Wingfield House)

A lovely evening at Wingfield House, with Lee, Su, Steve, Vicky, Jason and Sarah. Hadn't met Jason or Sarah before but they seemed nice enough. Jason had both arms completely tattoo'ed and I talked to him about that, also had a nice Omega with an orange bezel, so he can't be all bad!

Jason and Sarah left just after midnight, but the rest of us carried on the party, and about 2:30am the board games came out. After playing Taboo and Moods and realising it was 4am, everybody decided it was probably time for bed. I think we actually got to bed about 4:45am, in yet another bedroom, this onewith a large mirror and a TV but not quite as nice as the other one. Perhaps the lack of artwork let it down slightly. Nice carpet though, very plush.
Got up about 11am, feeling fairly ropey, and had a lovely bacon sandwich before heading home. Whereupon Rose retired to the sofa while I continued the epic decorating.

MEAL OUT: The Mail Coach (Northampton)

I walked past this place a few weeks ago and noticed that it looked fairly decent, so we made a beeline for it on our shopping trip to Northampton. It was rather nice inside and served us up a very decent scampi and chips. Pretty cheap too, less than £20 for two meals and drinks. Well worth knowing about for future visits.

Christmas 2015

Not the actual turkey.... we had chicken.

After finishing work at 11AM, we headed out to The Grey Goose for a couple of drinks. It wasn't as busy as we expected in there, but the staff were hard at work laying the tables for the Christmas Day onslaught (at £100 a head!).
Christmas Day we opened our presents at home then went off to Rose's Mum's house, where we had a lovely (but very filling) chicken dinner, with magnificent roast potatoes. After an extended break we dug in to the Tesco Millionaires Pudding and the GU Lemon Cheesecake. The first was better than expected, in fact absolutely delicious, the second was okay, not as good as the small ones in the glass jars. Oh well, you win some you lose some!
I can't remember too much about Boxing Day, I spent quite a lot of time sorting out which CDs I was going to put on Amazon/eBay, but apart from that the only thing I remember is watching the new Michael McIntyre DVD 'Happy and Glorious' (something of a return to form after the disappointment of 'Showtime').
On the 27th we watched a bizarre Alfred Hitchcock film called 'The Trouble with Harry', and I also spent quite a while putting extra shelves up in the second bedroom, giving Rose more room for books, and reducing the amount of shelving in the third bedroom.
The 28th was a very short day, as we had to leave at 4pm to go to a family function.
The 29th was more productive, we got up early and ventured over to Northampton and managed to pick up two new duvet covers, curtains and lampshades for the bedroom. We also sorted out the curtains and wallpaper for the forthcoming renovation of the little bedroom.

Carols on the Green (Fleckney)

As ever 'Carols on the Green' was slightly ramshackle, the silver band never quite knowing how many verses there are in each carol or playing slightly too slow. This year too was rather warm, but we still came home with cold feet.

MEAL OUT: White Lion (North Kilworth)

The Sunday before Christmas is always going to be a very risky time to go out for a meal, but the White Lion held it's end up admirably. Rose and I both chose the pancetta wrapped turkey parcels, while Rose opted for ice cream for pud and I had a warm stem ginger, banana and pecan pudding.
All very nice and almost certainly the best 'pre-Christmas' family meals we've had to date.

THEATRE: Blithe Spirit (Market Harborough)

Our last visit to Harborough Theatre in 2015, and it ended with one of the best plays we'd ever seen. Of course, no play is ever going to live up to the fantastic 1945 film starring Margaret Rutherford as Madame Arcati, but even so, this was a valiant attempt and made for a very enjoyable evening. As ever it was a bit warm in the theatre and we were close to nodding off at times, but a half-time Mint Choc Chip revived us and the second half didn't seem so bad. No reflection on the performances, which were all very good indeed. We also won third prize in the raffle, a box of Fox's Biscuits.
Robin played Charles Condomine and Ruth played Edith (the maid).

DRINKS: Shoulder of Mutton (Great Bowden)

Our friend Liz (who has been living and working in New Zealand for the past four years) was home for Christmas, so we nipped over to Great Bowden and spent a Sunday evening in the Shoulder of Mutton. Nothing much to say about the drinks, they were mostly out of a Britvic bottle. But it was nice to be in a pub that didn't get cold at 10pm, even if the seats weren't the most comfortable.
Liz's has definitely picked up a bit of an accent since her last visit home, and we had a good laugh about various things. Hopefully we will get to see her again before she goes back to NZ.

MEAL OUT: The Finch's Arms (Hambleton)

Our second visit to Lee and Su's new house saw us downgraded to the room without the en-suite... albeit it is very nicely decorated and we did get the use of the huge bathroom just next door. I particularly like the artwork over the bed (New York skyline?), too bad we only brought a small suitcase.
Work on the house is progressing nicely, with new carpets in the study and lounge area, new lights in the long hall, new sofas and carpet in the 'snug', not to mention a spectacular new en-suite and lots of other works ongoing. It's all coming together nicely.
And so we ventured out to the Finch's Arms, which seems like a long way away, but probably wasn't... but it was pissing it down, and Rose's Punto screen is prone to steaming up at the best of times. When we finally arrived it was to a car park bursting at the seams. So I unloaded the drinkers and headed back out to the road, which was double yellow lines and pitch black. I managed to park a way down the road and then walked back through a big puddle.
Not a great start, but the place looked nice and there was promise of free chestnuts (roast your own). The place is deceptively spacious out the back and we were led through to a large, modern dining room (later to be filled with a couple of big, noisy parties!). I was starving but as usual nothing on the starters appealed and with the promise of four likely looking puddings, didn't want to shoot my bolt prematurely!
Lee and Su ordered some poncy bollocks appetizers, which only delayed the arrival of the mains further (possibly) and as no bread was forthcoming I contemplated returning to the bar to claim my free chestnuts. I managed to hold off though, and was rewarded for my patience with a huge steak and a shitload of (very hot) chips. While not as superb as the Grey Goose the other night, they were still very good and the steak was lovely (albeit a bit pinker than I'd have liked).
After checking that the cheesecake was in one piece and not spread about the plate... I plumped for that, and again, it was very nice indeed. I would say the puddings here were better than the Fox and Hounds at Knossington, but the mains were better there. But overall, two good meals out from two trips, can't be bad.
The service was a little shoddy, possibly because most of the serving staff were up past their bedtime and were probably a little bit disoriented. They were also oblivious to the man who walked out of the restaurant clutching a Pepsi glass...
Returning home to Wingfield House we all sat around in a state of 'bloat', watching a boxing match and then waking up at midnight and setting about decorating the 40ft high Christmas tree in the kitchen.

We retired to bed just before two and had a decent night's sleep, though there was a very odd noise outside early in the morning, which sounded like a giant mechanical cricket. God knows what that was. Our bedroom was possibly the only room in the house that was missing a TV, although there were at least two spares knocking about. Not that we really wanted to watch TV at two in the morning.
Come the morning we were all feeling rather tired but I was pleased to note the breakfast was upgraded from Continental to bacon sandwiches at no extra charge. Very good, though we should have specified 'crispy' when asked if we had a preference, our mistake.

MEAL OUT: Grey Goose (Gilmorton)

Yet another visit to the Goose, and another delicious meal. After our bread (served with sea salted butter) we were brought a small taster course of soup (which was awesome, and just enough actually). Our mains were fantastic too, Rose had lamb with dauphinoise potatoes and I had the fillet, chips and peppercorn sauce. All perfect, and so filling!
We decided to share a pudding, which was a clementine cheesecake... but of course, as is the fashion at the moment it was a 'deconstructed' cheesecake. Why? Utter bollocks. Well the cheesecake part was nice, the coulis part was nice, there was virtually no crumb, the gingerbread shortbread was lovely and the ice cream was nice. The clementines soaked in mulled wine were disgusting though.
Still, that aside, it was a very nice meal indeed and a splendid way to spend some of my ill-gotten PPI money.
