MEAL OUT: The Black Horse (Walcote)

Our first visit to the newly revamped Black Horse at Walcote - well, I say newly revamped.. it's probably been at least five years since they knocked it down and rebuilt it, the point is we've never been there before. It is a curiously modern pub and as such it can't help but look a little bit like a house, in fact I wonder if that wasn't deliberate so that if the pub should fail it could be turned into a house and sold relatively easily.

It's a sad fact that 'cheap and cheerful' pubs are usually anything but, they are often 'cheap and grubby'... but this was really nice. Very clean, with no ingrained stench of cider and vinegar attacking the senses the moment you step through the door. The food is basic, but very nice and very reasonably priced. We both had Scampi and chips and there was plenty and it was exceedingly hot, this was £9. Unfortunately they didn't have any lemon slices, but actually I didn't miss it.

There were only two desserts on the dessert board; Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate Brownie (plus ice cream: Chocolate, Vanilla, Blueberry and Strawberry), we both plumped for the STP and it was perfectly serviceable. I mean, no extra caramel sauce but then it was only £5, and for that it was very nice and a good size to boot.

I think we shall definitely be back to the Black Horse, the surroundings were pleasant and the landlady was lovely. Although it's a pity it's not a little closer as it's just as far as the Grey Goose...
