GIG: Voivod (Manchester 2023)

Last time seeing Voivod (in Cardiff) was one of the best gigs of my life, so there was a lot of pressure for this show to live up to that one. Due to the pillar in front of the stage and the slightly left-field setlist (which in itself isn't a bad thing) this one fell just a tiny bit short of that epic gig, but this was still a brilliant night and well worth the trek.

We arrived at the venue about 8, and (like the Raven gig a few weeks back) we found that one poor band had already come and gone before the advertised opening time. Wow, I bet that was worthwhile for them huh. When we arrived 'Cryptic Shift' were playing, and they sounded quite a lot like Voivod. At least until they made a cryptic shift and started sounding like Morbid Angel, and then Cynic. Whatever, I couldn't care less, but they can obviously play their instruments and they are fine if you are younger and less jaded than me.

This was a new venue for us and it was okay. The pillar in front of the stage was a bit of a pain, but Snake made sure to keep moving and so we got to see plenty of him. As ever Daniel Mongrain just rips it up on the guitar, perfectly interpreting Piggy's unique compositions and keeping the band's music alive.

Set list was slightly bizarre, but in a way it's cool that we didn't just get the usual predictable stuff like Tribal Convictions and Astronomy Domine... Nuage Fractal was perhaps the oddest choice, being the deepest of deep album cuts from the Angel Rat album, indeed - Snake noted that they never played it before this tour. I enjoyed it but, there's other unplayed songs on that album I would rather hear.

Best song of the night for me was undoubtedly 'Killing Technology', and for that alone this is gig of the year for me so far.
