The plan today was actually to go to East Runton again, but due to a traffic jam on the A148 we ended up taking a detour and diverting to Old Hunstanton instead. We'd never been here before and it was quite a lot busier than East Runton, but once you got away from the beach right near the car park it was nice.
The beach kind of splits in two as you walk along and before you know it you are quite far from the sea, with some grass scrub separating you from the main beach. This eventually peters out and you are back on the beach.
We saw a seal, but unfortunately it was long dead, basically the spine and skin were left but nothing much else.
There was quite a lot of dogs around, some super cute Pomeranians and a very smiley Corgi. There was also a couple walking their dog at the far end of the beach, they were calling him and his name was 'Broadway'. What kind of stupid name is that for a dog? I imagine it's some sort of 'hilarious' running joke where they say 'give my regards to Broadway', or something equally dreadful.
After about 50mins we decided to turn back as the sun was coming out and making us warm. It was just as well we did to be honest, because being fuckwits we decided to walk back the beach way and this somehow took an hour and a half!
The problem was the beach is not just sand, there's quite a lot of 'rivers' on it and some of them quite deep and flowing. We came to a point where we realised we were essentially stuck, and were debating whether to walk all the way back and round or what. After some consternation we ended up crossing some smaller streams and getting our trainers and socks soaking wet and then eventually we had to take them off altogether to cross a larger stream that was maybe 10" deep but flowing very fast and was quite tricky to keep your footing in.
The annoying thing really was that it was quite hard to tell from a distance how deep and wide the water was, so we wasted quite a lot of time walking towards water that was deeper than we thought it was and then there was what looked like a broad river of water that was actually just wet sand, which we only realised when saw people walking across it.
I dried my socks on the dashboard on the way home and managed to drive home without any issues. Next time we will take spare socks, trainers and a towel when we go to the beach!
